I recently went to Greece for seven days. We stayed in Athens for two of these days and we really enjoyed it. This is what I recommend doing while there. Obviously this list isn’t comprehensive, but I highly recommend the things we did do!
What to Do in Athens
Go to the AcropolisNot only is the Parthenon amazing, but the views of the city from up here are spectacular. If you are unfamiliar with the Acropolis, it is Athen’s most notable landmark. It is an ancient citadel sitting on a rocky outcrop and home to many significant buildings such as the Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. While here you can also see the Propylaea, Erechtheion, Temple of Rome, and Temple of Athena Nike. As you walk along the path to the top you can also see Theatre of Dionysus and Herodes Atticus Theater. From the top you can also look down and see the Temple of Zeus and Temple of Hephaestus.Tip! If you aren’t parking, I recommend entering from the far side gate (over by Thrasillou and called the Dionysus Theater entrance). There is a much smaller line at this entrance and the path brings you by all the other sites that are a part of the Acropolis that you can’t see from the main entrance.
Visit the Acropolis MuseumHere you will see all the broken pieces of the Parthenon.
Walk around Plaka
This old historical neighborhood is filled with restaurants, shops, and ice cream parlors. Plaka is quaint and features neoclassical architecture throughout its winding streets. To avoid the crowds come here for breakfast. The pictures above were taken around 8-9 am. You will mostly have the streets to yourself!
